Meyer sets record to win City

Dylan Meyer didn’t just win the 85th annual Evansville Courier & Press Men’s City Golf Tournament.

The freshman-to-be at Illinois toured Evansville Country Club in 65 strokes (6-under) Sunday to finish the tournament with a new record total of 19-under par 265.

That eclipsed the previous mark of 17-under set by 10-time champion Kevin Wassmer with his win in 2002.

This year it was enough to beat runner-up David Mills by seven strokes.

Meyer had started the day with a one-shot lead over Mills and a nine-shot cushion over defending champion Logan Osborne, who was alone in third.

Then, after Meyer hit a 6-foot birdie putt at No. 2, nothing changed. Meyer added three more birdies on the front ninefor 30,  while Mills shot a 1-over 35 and the tournament was pretty much decided.

“I wanted to get off to a good start so they’d have to chase me,” said Meyer. “I was able to do that and then just go out and play my game one shot at a time. I played really well this weekend.”

Mills, who will turn pro Tuesday at a Hooters Tour event in Knoxville, Tenn., shot even-par 71 Sunday to finish in second place at 12-under 272…Steve Ford…
