Ladd stays on top with 67 at Fendrich
Matthew Ladd, 2016 Scism Scholarship Award winner and co first-round leader of the Courier & Press Men’s City Golf Tournament, continued his storybook run Sunday at Fendrich.
The freshman-to-be at the University of Evansville shot a 3-under par 67 to take a one-stroke lead over 2013 champion Logan Osborne, who also shot 67.
That put Ladd at 5-under par 136 and Osborne at 4-under, 137.
“When I walked in today I thought I could shoot 67,” said Ladd, who prepped at Memorial. “Out here you don’t have to drive it well and I didn’t.
“But you do have to make putts and I did that. My putter was on fire for par. I made sliders and 10-footers and had a couple that just dropped in.”
Osborne had a different view.
“My goal today was to just not screw up,” the former Central and University of Southern Indiana standout said. “Anything around 3- or 4-under was going to be good enough for me.
“You can’t win the tournament today, but you can shoot yourself out. I’m in good position for the next round.”
Stewie Hobgood was alone in third at 138. Jon Wagner and Grant Saylor were tied for fourth at 139.
The cut fell at 146, which tied the all-time low according to tournament officials.
