Osborne hits long putt on 18 to maintain one-shot lead

Logan Osborne, the 2013 Evansville Courier & Press Men’s City Golf Tournament champion, made a 60-foot uphill putt for par on No. 18 at Rolling Hills to hold onto a one-shot lead in the 2016 tourney Saturday at Rolling Hills.

Osborne needed the long putt to finish at even par 72 for the day and a three-round total of 4-under, 209.

It meant Osborne was one shot ahead of Matthew Ladd who led after each of the first two rounds. Ladd, who was 5-under to start the day, finished Saturday’s round at 2-over par 74. He stands at 210.

Stewie Hobgood, who started the day in third place, shot a one-over par 73 to stay there at 211.

Those three played in the last group Saturday and will form the final group Sunday when the tourney moves to Evansville Country Club for the final round. They have a 10:20 tee time.

“It was a strange round,” said Osborne. “I didn’t hit it particularly well, but I made three huge putts, including that one at 18.

“But I knew I had to try and make it, because the weather report is so uncertain for Sunday. Either way I’m happy to be able to finish even par. I’m very happy.”

Ladd, who had an eagle on No. 8 to forge a tie for the lead, was satisfied to still be close.

“I started bad,” said Ladd, the 2016 Dan Scism Scholarship Award winner, “but the eagle at No. 8 really helped. The further it went I thought ‘this might have a chance’ and then it fell in. Amazing.”
